Your Emotions

Unlock Your True Potential

Emotions are Subjective

Many people still believe that their emotions are the result of external events or the behaviour of others. If this were the case everybody would respond the same way to a given situation.

Let’s look at the example of skydiving, people jumping out of planes with parachutes.

Some people absolutely love the adrenaline rush. If money was no object they would have five jumps a day, seven days a week. Life would be great for them.

Other people would say “Hang on a minute, Klaus. You can pay me a million dollars but I’m not going to jump out of that plane”. These people perceive the same experience as extremely painful.

Most people would fall somewhere in between these two extreme response, creating a whole spectrum of responses.

The reason that there is such a varied response is that pleasure and pain are subjective, not objective. What one person perceives as pleasurable another person may perceive as painful. This is not just true for skydiving but for every other life experience. Some people enjoy constant attention while others are frightened out of their mind of giving a short five minute talk to three people.

The reason that your emotional preferences are different from the next person is due to differences in your genes as well the different life experiences the two of you have encountered. If you were born with their genes and had experienced their life you would end up with their preferences.

Emotions are a Part of Life

Feelings and emotions are a part of human life. As long as you live in a human body you will experience feelings and emotions.

Most of the time these feelings and emotions are quite mild and take a backseat. You may hardly notice them but they are there nonetheless. Sometimes we have experience that are highly charged with emotion. These emotions may be pleasurable (such as joy, happiness or love) or painful (such as rage, hatred, anger or humiliation).

There is no limit to the intensity of pleasant emotions that you can process. There is however a limit to the amount of unpleasant or painful emotion that you are able to process.

Your Emotional Pain Threshold

We all have an emotional pain threshold. It is different for different people and it can change throughout your lifetime but it is always there. It is part of your survival mechanism.

When you experience an excess of emotional pain your nervous system shuts down to protect you from a heart attack or a nervous breakdown. This is similar to the circuit breakers in your electrical wiring that protect you electrical appliances from a power surge on the electricity grid.

In the electrical analogy the excess electricity is diverted into the ground and is dispersed by the huge mass of our planet.

This is where the analogy breaks down. Your mind (your nervous system) cannot simply discard the excess painful emotions. As a result it ends up storing them for future processing. Of course it would be useless if you were continually exposed to the unprocessed pain so your mind tries to hide the emotional pain from you as much as possible. this is achieved through a variety of processes. You try not to think about the event, or at least not in detail. You use different softer language to tone down the emotional intensity. To protect you from the unprocessed pain the cellular memory of the event is declared a “No Go Zone”.

Suppressed Painful Emotions

Slowly but surely the event is driven deeper into your unconscious and outside your conscious awareness.

As more and more unprocessed painful emotions are accumulated the resultant “No Go Zones” start to interfere with cellular communication and the effective function of your bodily functions. If the intensity of the suppressed emotions is sufficient and they remain unresolved for long periods of time they can contribute to physical illnesses.

The primary task of your unconscious mind is to keep you as healthy as possible. Your unconscious mind understands that there is a price to pay for suppressed emotions so whenever it identifies a potential opportunity for resolution the suppressed pain is presented in the hope of healing.

For example, something may irritate you and your unconscious mind decides to make you aware of some suppressed anger that lies dormant in your unconscious. This is done in the hope that you may find the courage to deal with the unresolved emotions. Often however you are simply frustrated by the sudden outburst of anger and are unable to make any sense of it.

Since pleasure and pain drive all of our decision making these suppressed painful emotions cause enormous amounts of self-sabotage due to the irrational association of pain to various types of life events.

Using advanced hypnotherapy techniques
these suppressed emotions can be resolved quickly and easily.
